Harnessed up, I began the long climb to the top carrying heavy gear as I went. Slamming my spikes in the side of the pole dislodged some of the ice but there was still some that remained. I was having a very tough time. It was so cold that my joints were aching and the climb was very slow and tedious. I slipped several times and would plummet a few feet towards the ground when I'd get a spike driven into the wood of the pole and stop the descent. Scared? No, of course not. Scared to death, yes. I finally made it to the top, did what I was supposed to do and began my climb down. New ice had formed on the pole and it was more difficult going down then it was going up.
鈥? By all accounts, Baptista kept the business afloat by taking on consultancy work, including collaborations with Nike and Uniqlo, who appreciated the designer鈥檚 graphic, sleek silhouettes and sense for functionality. 鈥淚 have always loved and accentuated the functional aspect of garments; they are a shell, a protection. In 2009, Baptista, eager to grow his business commercially, began showing on the Paris ready-to-wear schedule. Few suspected Baptista to be choosen for the role, however. Half a dozen finalists were asked to propose how they 鈥渨ould modernise the brand, whilst respecting its heritage and its international dimension,鈥?Baptista recalls. The management at Lacoste liked his proposal. 鈥淚鈥檓 fond of uniforms, sports, nature, which are all things that rang true to the team.鈥? But taking the creative reins at Lacoste,23292 (3), a global licensing business with a turnover of over $1 billion,evening dresses for sale, was 鈥渁s challenging as it was exciting,鈥?Baptista recalls. 鈥淭he more I worked on the pitch, the more I felt what Lacoste and my own brand shared.鈥?The house wanted to re-energise its womenswear offering with a more modern definition of luxurious sportswear. 鈥淚 got the feeling I intimately understood Lacoste, and proposed a healthy, athletic, slightly androgynous woman, which rang true for them. |
